River Otters and Pets in Florida

A dog that swims after an otter has picked a fight it cannot win - on a shoreline that may also hold alligators and cottonmouths.

Most visitors never meet most of this. Florida is a big state and its wildlife changes a lot from region to region - a cane toad is a South Florida backyard problem, a black bear is a central and north Florida one, and a crocodile only matters in the far south. These guides are here for the encounter you do have, not because one is likely.

North American river otters live throughout Florida in and around freshwater and brackish habitats.

They are playful-looking animals, but they are still wild predators with strong teeth and powerful bodies.

For pet owners:

Do not let dogs chase, corner or swim toward river otters.

Where River Otters Live

Florida river otters are associated with:

  • Rivers
  • Lakes
  • Marshes
  • Swamps
  • Canals
  • Ponds
  • Coastal estuaries

They may also travel over land between water bodies.

Why Dogs Chase Them

Otters:

  • Swim quickly
  • Dive
  • Splash
  • Run across banks

That movement can trigger a dog’s chase instinct.

A dog that enters the water after an otter can create a dangerous close encounter.

Otters Can Defend Themselves

River otters have:

  • Strong jaws
  • Sharp teeth
  • Powerful neck and body muscles

They should never be treated like oversized playful pets.

Keep Dogs Away From Water Edges

This is especially important in Florida because the same shoreline can also hold:

  • Alligators
  • Cottonmouths
  • Other wildlife

Use a short leash and keep the dog out of open freshwater.

Do Not Let Dogs Swim Toward Otters

Even if an otter appears curious, do not allow interaction.

Wildlife curiosity is not the same thing as invitation.

Otter Groups

Otters may be seen:

  • Alone
  • In pairs
  • In family groups

Never let a dog approach young otters.

An adult may defend them.

If an Otter Approaches

Back away calmly.

Do not:

  • Feed
  • Corner
  • Throw food
  • Let dog bark from close range

Fishing Areas

Otters often use the same water systems as anglers.

Dogs should also be kept away from:

  • Hooks
  • Fishing line
  • Bait

while watching for otters.

If an Otter Bites Your Pet

Contact a veterinarian immediately.

Any wildlife bite can cause:

  • Puncture wounds
  • Infection
  • Tissue damage

FWC also advises reporting mammal bites to your local county health department.

Do Not Feed River Otters

Feeding wildlife can make animals more comfortable approaching people and pets.

Keep food and fish scraps secured.

Vacation Rentals Near Water

At a canal, lake or river rental:

  • Supervise pets
  • Use leash
  • Do not allow shoreline wandering
  • Use flashlight at night
  • Keep pet food indoors

Best Otter-Safety Checklist

  • Short leash
  • No freshwater swimming
  • Do not allow chasing
  • Stay away from young otters
  • Do not feed
  • Call vet after bite
  • Report mammal bite as appropriate

River otters are one of Florida’s most charismatic native mammals.

The safest way for your dog to enjoy them is from a distance.
