Most visitors never meet most of this. Florida is a big state and its wildlife changes a lot from region to region - a cane toad is a South Florida backyard problem, a black bear is a central and north Florida one, and a crocodile only matters in the far south. Ospreys are among the easiest raptors to see in Florida.
They are strongly associated with water and often nest on:
- Utility poles
- Platforms
- Channel markers
- Bridges
- Tall dead trees
They are sometimes called fish hawks because fish make up most of their diet.
For dog owners:
Keep dogs away from nests, grounded birds and fish scraps below nesting sites.
Ospreys Are Everywhere Near Water
You may see them around:
- Beaches
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Marinas
- Intracoastal waterways
- Golf courses
- Fishing piers
Nest Sites
Ospreys often build large stick nests in exposed locations.
Do not let dogs:
- Bark beneath nests
- Run around nest supports
- Disturb fledglings on the ground
Fledglings
Young ospreys may spend time near the ground or on low structures while learning to fly.
Keep pets back.
A young bird may still be under parental care.
Fish Scraps
Ospreys may drop:
- Fish pieces
- Bones
- Scales
near nest sites.
Do not let dogs eat them.
There may also be:
- Hooks
- Fishing line
- Spoiled tissue
Fishing Line Is a Major Threat
Fishing line can entangle ospreys.
Pet owners can help by:
- Picking up discarded line
- Keeping dogs away from entangled birds
- Reporting injured wildlife
Do Not Approach an Injured Osprey
Ospreys have sharp:
- Talons
- Bill
A frightened bird can defend itself.
Keep dogs away and contact a wildlife rehabilitator.
Marina Encounters
Ospreys commonly nest around marinas.
Keep dogs:
- Leashed
- Away from nest structures
- Away from fish-cleaning stations
Lakes and Ponds
Ospreys may hunt over freshwater.
Remember that Florida pond edges may also contain alligators.
Do not let your dog run toward the water while watching an osprey fish.
