What we collect
You do not need an account to read anything here, and we do not ask you to register, subscribe or hand over personal details in order to use the site.
What we do collect is ordinary website analytics: which pages are viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, which site or search referred you, and what kind of browser and device you used. This is collected in aggregate and is used to work out which guides are useful and which need rewriting.
Our web host also keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting.
Cookies
Cookies and similar technologies are used on this site in three ways:
- Analytics. To count visits and understand how pages are used.
- Affiliate tracking. When you click an affiliate link, the merchant may set a cookie so that a resulting booking or purchase is credited to us. That cookie is set by the merchant, on their terms, not ours.
- Advertising. Where advertising is shown, the ad provider may set cookies to measure and target it.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The guides will still read perfectly well without them.
Third parties
Some services we rely on receive data about your visit directly, because they run in your browser:
- Our analytics provider.
- Google Fonts, which serves the typeface this site uses.
- Booking sites, retailers and other merchants, once you click through to them.
Once you leave this site by following a link, you are covered by that company’s privacy policy rather than ours. We have no control over what they collect.
What we do not do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not build a marketing list from visitors and we do not pass visitor data to anyone except the service providers described above.
Your choices
Depending on where you live you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, or to object to it being processed. Because this site does not have accounts, in most cases there is very little to hold. Contact us if you want to make a request and we will deal with it.
Children
This site is written for adults planning travel and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
