Updated September 7, 2026 2 min read By

Destin’s beach rules are much stricter than many Florida pet travelers expect.

The current rule is:

Ordinary dogs are not allowed on beaches in Destin or Okaloosa County.

That includes the famous white-sand Gulf shoreline.

The City of Destin currently states that:

Pets are NOT ALLOWED on the beaches.

The city FAQ says dogs are not allowed on beaches in Destin/Okaloosa County and directs visitors to Nancy Weidenhamer Dog Park.

Henderson Beach Nature Trail

The park’s nature trail is approximately 0.75 mile.

This is a useful legal alternative for dog travelers who still want to experience the park’s dune environment.

Henderson Beach Reservation Requirement

As of May 15, 2026, the park requires day-use reservations.

Check availability before driving over.

Liza Jackson Park — Fort Walton Beach

This is outside Destin proper but useful as part of a regional trip.

What About Okaloosa Island?

Ordinary pets are not allowed on the beaches there either.

Do not drive across the bridge expecting the rule to change.

Why Are the Rules So Strict?

Destin and Okaloosa County beaches support sensitive coastal habitat and heavy visitor use.

Henderson Beach State Park protects:

  • Dunes
  • Sea turtles
  • Migratory birds
  • Shorebirds
  • Marine life

Keep dogs away from wildlife even in legal pet areas.
