What the W’s $250 Fee Means Over a Week

W Fort Lauderdale charges a $250 nonrefundable pet fee per stay, as listed above. Per stay is the key phrase: on a three-night trip that is about $83 a night, on a week about $36 a night, and the same $250 either way. A hotel with a $50 nightly fee would cost less on one night and more on six. Run the whole trip through each hotel’s policy before you decide which is cheaper.

Service Animals at a Fort Lauderdale Hotel

Pet rules do not govern a service animal. The ADA defines one as a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability, and Florida law, which limits the term to a dog or miniature horse, requires hotels and other public accommodations to permit it. The ADA requires businesses to waive pet fees and deposits for service animals, and lets them exclude a service dog only when it is out of control and the handler does not act, or when it is not housebroken. The 45-pound limit and the two-pet cap are pet rules, and size is not among the ADA’s reasons for exclusion.

  • Staff may ask only whether the dog is required because of a disability and what work or task it has been trained to perform. They cannot require certification or documentation.
  • A hotel cannot charge a cleaning fee for a service animal’s hair. It can charge the same damage fee it charges other guests.
  • Emotional support animals are not service animals under the ADA or Florida law, so the ordinary pet policy and fee can apply to them.
  • Florida treats knowingly misrepresenting a pet as a service animal as a second-degree misdemeanor with 30 hours of community service.
