South FL

Fort Lauderdale

Canine Beach is a specific zone with specific hours, not the whole beachfront - plus Las Olas, Riverwalk and the Broward dog parks.

Fort Lauderdale is one of South Florida’s best destinations for dog travelers because it combines:

  • A designated Canine Beach
  • Dog parks
  • Waterfront walks
  • Outdoor restaurants
  • More than 100 pet-friendly hotels in the broader Greater Fort Lauderdale area
  • Easy access to Hollywood, Dania Beach and inland Broward parks

The biggest rule to know is simple:

Ordinary dogs are prohibited on the sandy portion of Fort Lauderdale Beach except in the designated Canine Beach area.

Fort Lauderdale Canine Beach

Fort Lauderdale’s designated Canine Beach is located near:

1269 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard

Current city rules place it from lifeguard tower 16 to a point 100 yards north of Sunrise Boulevard.

Current hours are:

6:00–9:00 a.m. 5:00–7:00 p.m.

The city currently limits owners or handlers to a maximum of three dogs.

Official city guide: parks.fortlauderdale.gov

A1A Dog Walking

Fort Lauderdale also permits dog walking on part of A1A.

Current city guidance allows dogs:

  • On the west side of A1A from Sunrise Boulevard south to the Fort Lauderdale Beach / Seabreeze Boulevard intersection during designated hours
  • On the west side of A1A north of Sunrise Boulevard 24 hours a day

This can be useful when the dog needs a beachfront walk without going onto the sand.

Holiday Park Dog Park

Holiday Park has a designated dog park, but it is currently affected by major construction.

As of 2026, Fort Lauderdale says:

  • Improvements began in 2026
  • The western portion of the existing dog park is closed during construction
  • Walking paths are affected
  • Full project completion is expected in summer 2027

Check current conditions before making a special trip.

Snyder Park

Greater Fort Lauderdale tourism currently highlights the Bark Park at Snyder Park as one of the area’s major dog destinations.

This can be a better choice when you want off-leash exercise rather than beach access.

Hollywood Dog Beach

Hollywood Beach has another designated dog-beach area.

Current regional tourism guidance describes it as a dog-friendly shoreline option with restrictions and designated times.

This is useful for travelers staying south of central Fort Lauderdale.

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is very walkable and dog-friendly around town.

Current Visit Lauderdale guidance says well-behaved dogs are commonly seen:

  • On outdoor restaurant patios
  • Walking through town

But the actual beach is restricted to humans only.

That makes it a strong town outing but not a dog-beach destination.

Las Olas Boulevard

Las Olas is one of Fort Lauderdale’s strongest dog-friendly city corridors.

A leashed dog comfortable with urban walking can join you for:

  • Outdoor patios
  • Shops
  • Downtown walking
  • Riverfront access

Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale

Riverwalk is another good leashed-dog outing.

Use:

  • Early morning
  • Late afternoon
  • Evening

during hot months.

Boating With a Dog

Fort Lauderdale’s waterways are central to the city.

Regional tourism guidance notes that dogs are commonly seen on:

  • Boats
  • Yachts
  • Paddleboards

If you’re taking a dog on the water, use a properly fitted life jacket and keep the dog away from fishing hooks and lines.

See our Boating With Dogs in Florida guide.

Heat

South Florida heat is serious.

Best schedule:

Early morning: Canine Beach or long walk Midday: Air conditioning Evening: Las Olas or patio dinner

Pavement

Beachfront sidewalks and downtown streets can become extremely hot.

Test the pavement before long walks.

Wildlife

South Florida wildlife can include:

  • Iguanas
  • Snakes
  • Cane toads
  • Alligators around freshwater
  • Shorebirds
  • Sea turtles

Keep dogs controlled and away from unfamiliar wildlife.

A Good Pet-Friendly Fort Lauderdale Day

Morning: Canine Beach.

Late morning: Breakfast on a dog-friendly patio.

Midday: Hotel or rental break.

Late afternoon: Snyder Park or a neighborhood walk.

Evening: Las Olas / Riverwalk dinner.
