Daytona Beach

Volusia County now has four designated dog beaches - including 1.7 miles in central Daytona between Williams Avenue and Seabreeze Boulevard.

Daytona Beach is more pet-friendly than many people assume, but you need to understand one important limitation immediately:

Dogs are not generally allowed on the main swimming beaches of Daytona Beach.

Instead, Volusia County provides designated dog-friendly beach areas and numerous parks where dogs are welcome.

That means Daytona can still work very well for a pet trip.

You just have to know where to go.

Is Daytona Beach Dog Friendly?

Yes.

The Daytona Beach area has:

  • Designated dog-friendly beach sections
  • Dog parks
  • Riverfront walks
  • Pet-friendly hotels
  • Outdoor restaurants
  • Trails
  • Vacation rentals

The dog experience is just different from St. Augustine or Amelia Island, where leashed dogs can use much more of the regular beach.

Can Dogs Go on Daytona Beach?

Not on most of the main beach.

Volusia County generally prohibits ordinary pets from its regular oceanfront beaches.

However, designated dog-friendly beach areas exist.

The two major options are:

  • Lighthouse Point Park
  • Smyrna Dunes Park

These are both excellent destinations and give dog travelers legal Atlantic access.

Lighthouse Point Park

Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet is one of the best dog-friendly beach options in the Daytona area.

Dogs are permitted on the designated beach area and must remain leashed.

The park also includes:

  • Boardwalks
  • Nature trails
  • Fishing
  • Picnic areas
  • Scenic inlet views

This is one of the first places we’d recommend to a visitor staying around Daytona Beach with a dog.

Smyrna Dunes Park

Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach provides another designated dog-friendly beach area.

The large park includes:

  • Boardwalk
  • Dunes
  • Inlet
  • Beach access
  • Nature habitat

Dogs must remain leashed.

For visitors staying south of Daytona Beach, Smyrna Dunes can be the more convenient choice.

Daytona Beach Dog Park

Daytona Beach has municipal dog-park options where dogs can exercise off leash in designated areas.

These can be useful after several days of leash-only outings.

Check current:

  • Hours
  • Dog-size sections
  • Water availability
  • Rules

before making a special trip.

Riverfront Esplanade

Downtown Daytona’s Riverfront Esplanade gives you another outdoor walking option along the Halifax River.

This is useful when:

  • Beach rules are restrictive
  • You want an evening walk
  • You are staying near downtown

Check pavement heat before walking in summer.

Ponce Inlet

Ponce Inlet is one of the best sub-areas for pet travelers because of Lighthouse Point Park and the quieter coastal atmosphere.

It can be a better fit than central Daytona if the dog is a major part of the trip.

New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach is south of Daytona and works well for dog travelers because Smyrna Dunes Park provides designated beach access.

If your trip is centered on the dog and ocean, consider whether staying closer to New Smyrna Beach makes more sense than staying in central Daytona.

Pet-Friendly Restaurants

The Daytona Beach area has plenty of outdoor dining.

The strongest pet-friendly restaurant areas include:

  • Daytona Beach
  • Ormond Beach
  • Ponce Inlet
  • New Smyrna Beach

Our dedicated Pet-Friendly Restaurants in Daytona Beach guide will focus on current patios where dogs are actually welcomed.

Pet-Friendly Hotels

Daytona’s hotel inventory is enormous.

You’ll find pet-friendly options across:

  • Oceanfront
  • International Speedway Boulevard
  • Ormond Beach
  • Daytona Beach Shores
  • I-95 corridor

Always check whether the pet policy includes:

  • Nightly fee
  • Per-stay fee
  • Weight limit
  • Two-pet limit
  • Dogs only
  • Cats allowed

Oceanfront Hotel Doesn’t Mean Dog Beach

This is important.

A hotel may sit directly on the Atlantic and still be adjacent to a beach where ordinary dogs are prohibited.

If beach access for the dog is important, look at the distance to:

  • Lighthouse Point Park
  • Smyrna Dunes Park

rather than simply booking an ocean-view room.

Vacation Rentals

Vacation rentals can be especially useful in:

  • Ponce Inlet
  • Daytona Beach Shores
  • Ormond Beach
  • New Smyrna Beach

A rental can give you:

  • More space
  • Private entrance
  • Yard
  • Kitchen
  • Laundry

For longer pet stays, this can beat a standard oceanfront hotel.

Daytona International Speedway

Ordinary pets generally cannot accompany spectators into major sporting venues.

If you’re coming for:

  • Daytona 500
  • Bike Week
  • Other large events

you need a separate plan for the dog.

That may mean:

  • Daycare
  • Boarding
  • Pet sitter
  • Rental where unattended pets are allowed

Do not assume a pet-friendly hotel allows the dog to stay alone all day.

Bike Week and Large Events

Daytona can become extremely crowded during major events.

A dog comfortable on a quiet beach may not enjoy:

  • Motorcycles
  • Crowds
  • Noise
  • Busy sidewalks

During Bike Week or race events, choose quieter areas such as:

  • Ponce Inlet
  • Ormond Beach
  • New Smyrna Beach

if your dog is noise-sensitive.

Heat

Daytona is still Florida.

Summer pet travel works best on a split schedule:

Early morning: outdoor activity Midday: air conditioning Evening: second outing

See our Florida Pet Travel: Heat Safety guide.

Saltwater

Bring fresh water.

Do not allow dogs to drink significant amounts of ocean water.

Wildlife

Around dunes, inlets and parks, keep dogs away from:

  • Shorebirds
  • Sea turtle nests
  • Wildlife
  • Dunes

Lighthouse Point Park and Smyrna Dunes protect important coastal habitat.

A Good Daytona Pet-Friendly Day

Morning: Lighthouse Point Park.

Late morning: Ponce Inlet walk or pet-friendly breakfast.

Midday: Hotel or rental break.

Late afternoon: Dog park.

Evening: Riverfront or pet-friendly patio.

Another Day

Morning: Smyrna Dunes Park.

Midday: New Smyrna Beach lunch.

Afternoon: Rest.

Evening: Ormond Beach or Daytona riverfront walk.

Best Area to Stay With a Dog

Ponce Inlet

Best for dog beach access.

New Smyrna Beach

Best for Smyrna Dunes and a more relaxed beach-town atmosphere.

Central Daytona Beach

Best for:

  • Events
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Speedway access

but not the best if the dog needs direct beach access.

Ormond Beach

Good compromise for quieter lodging north of central Daytona.

Daytona vs. St. Augustine for Dogs

If your priority is:

Walk out of the hotel and take the dog onto almost any nearby beach, St. Augustine is easier.

If you want:

  • Daytona attractions
  • Motorsports
  • Large hotel inventory
  • Designated dog beaches

Daytona works well.

Different trip.

Different beach rules.

Before You Go

Pack:

  • Leash
  • Backup leash
  • Water
  • Portable bowl
  • Waste bags
  • Towels
  • ID
  • Vaccination information
  • Paw protection if appropriate

And check the exact beach rules before arriving.

More Pet-Friendly Daytona Beach

Next in this cluster:

Daytona isn’t a free-for-all dog-beach destination.

But with Lighthouse Point, Smyrna Dunes, parks and a huge lodging market, it can still make an excellent Florida trip with a dog.
