The approximately 3-acre park includes:
- Separate large- and small-dog areas
- Grass
- Shade
- Water stations
- Benches
- Waste receptacles

Walk the Henderson Beach Nature Trail
Henderson Beach State Park allows leashed pets on its nature trail.
Current pet rules require:
- Hand-held leash no longer than six feet
- Good behavior
- Cleanup
Dogs are not allowed on the beach.
The park’s nature trail is about 0.75 mile.
This is one of the better ways to experience Destin’s dune environment with a dog without violating beach rules.
Remember the Henderson Reservation
As of May 15, 2026, Henderson Beach State Park requires day-use reservations.
Check before arriving.
Walk Destin Harbor
The official Destin-Fort Walton Beach tourism office promotes a walk along Destin Harbor as a low-key outdoor activity.
The harbor has more than 100 boat slips and is famous for charter boats returning with the day’s catch.
A leashed dog can make this a fun outing if it handles:

Older local tourism guidance has specifically recommended Destin Commons as a dog-friendly outing.
Individual stores decide whether dogs may come inside.
Take a Regional Dog-Park Trip
The official Destin-Fort Walton Beach tourism FAQ also highlights Liza Jackson Park in Fort Walton Beach for its dog park and waterfront view.
This can be worth the short regional drive.

Gulf Islands National Seashore on Okaloosa Island
Destin’s neighbor across the pass, Okaloosa Island, is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, where the rules come from the National Park Service. For dogs they match what you already know about Destin: pets are not allowed on any park beach, Gulf side or bay side, or in water less than five feet deep in the Florida areas, and they are not allowed in forts, pavilions, piers, visitor centers or on historic structures.
Pets are allowed on trails, multi-use paths and park roads, on a leash of 6 feet or less, and must be attended at all times, campgrounds included. The park says many of its Florida beach restrictions follow local county ordinances, which is why the line is the same on both sides of the pass. If you want sand with a dog on this stretch of the Panhandle, the nearest legal options are the ones in our Destin beaches and parks guide, not the seashore.
