Lost or found pet in Volusia County
Who picks up a stray in Volusia depends on which city it is in, and that changed in October 2025. The county shelter in DeLand now takes strays only from unincorporated areas, Oak Hill and Pierson. Daytona Beach's strays go to New Hope Animal Shelter in DeLand - not Halifax Humane Society, which many older listings still name. Deltona runs its own animal control.
If you do not know which applies, call county dispatch at 386-248-1777 and they will route it. Pets picked up by the county are posted online for three days, so check the county's search page daily and visit shelters in person.
Emergency and after-hours vets
Volusia has two true 24-hour animal hospitals, one on each side of the county: Ormond Beach on the coast and DeLand to the west. The South Daytona emergency center is overnight-only Monday to Thursday and open around the clock Friday through Sunday.

Injured wildlife, or a run-in with it
The county's own Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet takes injured seabirds and sea turtles. A stranded sea turtle or manatee anywhere on the beach is an FWC call first.
Hurricane season: pet-friendly shelters
Volusia does not publish a standing list of pet-friendly shelters - sites are announced for each storm on the county's emergency app, volusia.org and social media. "PF" shelters house pets in a separate area; "PPS" (people and pets together) has been the Volusia County Fairgrounds. Only designated pet-friendly shelters take animals; bring a leash or carrier, food and medications.
About Volusia County
Volusia County stretches from the Flagler County line at Ormond-by-the-Sea south to Oak Hill, and inland across the St. Johns River to DeLand, the county seat, and Deltona on I-4. It has 16 cities: Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, DeBary, DeLand, Deltona, Edgewater, Holly Hill, Lake Helen, New Smyrna Beach, Oak Hill, Orange City, Ormond Beach, Pierson, Ponce Inlet, Port Orange and South Daytona.
Highways through it: I-95 crosses the county north to south for about 38 miles, and I-4 runs 27 miles from the coast southwest toward Orlando. US 1 follows the coast; US 17-92 runs through DeLand, Orange City and DeBary on the west side.
What catches pets out here:
- Dogs on the beach are limited to four stretches, sunrise to sunset only, on a leash no longer than six feet: Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet, Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach, Rockefeller Drive to Milsap Road in Ormond Beach, and between Williams Avenue and Seabreeze Boulevard in Daytona Beach. Cars drive on parts of these beaches too – keep a short leash.
- Blue-green algae: the health department posted alerts for Lake George and Lake Monroe in 2026. Keep pets out of the water during an alert and see a vet if a pet gets sick after swimming.
- Rabies alerts happen here – Daytona Beach had one in July 2026 after a rabid cat near A1A. Keep pets vaccinated, leashed and away from strays and wildlife.
- Black bears – west Volusia around the Ocala National Forest and the St. Johns River is bear country. Do not leave pet food outside overnight at a rental.
- Daytona Beach leash law: a dog outside a fully fenced yard must be on a leash or tether no longer than eight feet.
Before you drive through
Most lost dogs on a road trip get out at a gas stop. Four cheap things make the call above far less likely - or far shorter.
