Sarasota is a strong Gulf Coast fishing destination with access to:
- Sarasota Bay
- Gulf beaches
- Inshore flats
- Passes
- Piers
- Nearby Venice
For dog owners, the biggest advantage is nearby Brohard Paw Park, one of Florida’s best-known dog beaches.
Inshore Fishing
Sarasota Bay is excellent for inshore fishing.
Common species include:
- Snook
- Redfish
- Spotted seatrout
- Sheepshead
A private inshore boat can be a good dog setup if:
- Captain allows pets
- Dog wears a life jacket
- Hooks stay contained
Venice and Brohard Paw Park
Brohard Paw Park in Venice is the standout dog-beach option in the Sarasota region.
It offers legal off-leash beach access.
Important
Do not cast into the active off-leash dog area.
Fish elsewhere and use Brohard as the dog’s separate beach time.
Gulf Fishing
The Sarasota and Venice coastline offers:
- Surf fishing
- Nearshore fishing
- Charter fishing
Dogs are not allowed on any of these beaches except Brohard Paw Park – details below.
Piers and Jetties
Popular fishing structures can be crowded and hook-heavy.
Even when dogs are allowed nearby, consider whether the deck itself is a safe place for a dog.
Myakka River Area
Freshwater and brackish areas near Sarasota can hold alligators.
Do not let dogs:
- Swim
- Wade
- Stand at the water’s edge
Kayak Fishing
Protected bay water can be good for dog-friendly kayak fishing.
Keep the dog:
- In life jacket
- Aboard
- Away from tackle
Where Your Dog Is and Is Not Allowed
Sarasota County is strict about dogs near the water, and most of its popular fishing beaches are off-limits to them. The short version:
- Brohard Paw Park, Venice – yes. The only beach in the whole county where dogs are legal: off-leash on the marked section under voice control, plus a fenced play yard, dog showers, drinking fountains, waste bags, a restroom and an accessible boardwalk. Open 7am to dusk, year-round; the free lot is at 1850 Harbor Drive S. and fills on cool-season mornings. Watch the posted signs that mark where the dog beach ends.
- Humphris Park and the South Jetty, Venice – parking lot only. The City of Venice allows leashed dogs in the parking area, but not on the beach or the South Jetty walkway. That rules out one of the area’s best-known fishing spots for a dog.
- Every other county beach – no, including Nokomis Beach and the North Jetty next to it, and Siesta Key.
- Venice walking paths – leashed. Pinebrook Park (walking trail only) and Maxine Barritt Park (paved path only) take leashed dogs, useful for a walk between fishing sessions.
Service animals are allowed throughout. Everything above is about pet dogs.
Myakka River State Park
Myakka is Sarasota’s big freshwater fishing ground, and it welcomes dogs on its trails and in the developed campgrounds, on a leash no longer than six feet and with vaccinations up to date. Two limits matter: pets are not allowed in buildings or on structures, including the Canopy Walkway, and the park itself tells owners not to bring a pet near shallow water.
That second rule is about alligators. Myakka’s river and lakes hold a lot of them, and the shallow bank where you would stand to fish is exactly where a dog is most at risk. Fish from a spot with open ground behind you, keep the dog several leash-lengths back from the edge, and never let it drink or wade. Our alligator encounter guide covers what to do if one approaches.
Oscar Scherer State Park
In Osprey, between Sarasota and Venice. Dogs are allowed in the campground and the visitor recreation areas, but by law not on the swimming beach or in the lake. If you camp, ask for a pet-eligible site – the park notes that several creekside campsites are not pet-friendly because of how close they sit to the water.
Licenses
Anyone 16 or older fishing in Florida needs a saltwater or freshwater license unless an exemption applies – Myakka is freshwater, the bay and Gulf are saltwater, and they are separate licenses. Both are sold at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com and most tackle shops. A charter captain’s license usually covers everyone aboard, so on a guided trip ask before you buy.
Heat
Sarasota summers are hot and humid.
Bring:
- Fresh water
- Shade
- Cooling mat
- Short leash
Wildlife
Watch for:
- Manatees
- Dolphins
- Sharks
- Stingrays
- Shorebirds
Keep dogs from chasing or swimming toward wildlife.
