The Caloosahatchee River and nearby estuaries offer strong inshore fishing.

Fort Myers Beach is a major fishing destination.

Check the exact beach and park pet rules before bringing a dog onto sand.

Bonita Beach Dog Park

Bonita’s Dog Beach Park is one of the region’s strongest pet attractions.

It offers off-leash access in a shallow back-bay setting.

Important

Do not combine active fishing and off-leash dog swimming in the same space.

Hooks and free-running dogs are a poor combination.

Sanibel

Current regional guidance lists both:

as leashed-dog-friendly.

That makes Sanibel one of Southwest Florida’s better options for pairing beach access and fishing.

Blind Pass is popular with anglers.

Fort Myers Beach: Leashed, With Two Hard Exclusions

Dogs are allowed on the town beach on Estero Island under the town’s leash ordinance – but two parts of that same shoreline are closed to them outright, and they are easy to walk into:

The Little Estero Island Critical Wildlife Area at the south end. Nesting birds; no pets at all.
The Lee County beach parks – Crescent Beach, Lynn Hall and Bowditch Point. County park rules ban pets even though the town beach either side allows them.

Note also that Lee County’s own beach park lots have been closed for Hurricane Ian repairs, so parking is mostly town and private lots. Check before you drive down with a car full of rods.

Dog Beach Park, Bonita Springs: Go at Low Tide

Lee County’s Dog Beach Park at New Pass is the region’s off-leash beach: dogs run free, there is free parking, portable toilets, a donated rinse-off shower and bags at the entrance, dawn to dusk.

The detail nobody mentions: it is a tidal flat. At mid to high tide you can only reach the beach by wading, which is fine for the dog and awkward with tackle. Check the tide chart and go low – which is often the better fishing tide at the pass anyway.

Do not fish the off-leash area itself. Free-running dogs and hooks on a small tidal flat is the one combination this site will always argue against.

Sanibel Is the Exception on This Coast

Where most Southwest Florida communities fence dogs out, all of Sanibel’s public beaches are dog friendly, leashed to 8 feet or less under the city code. For an angler that is unusual access: Lighthouse Beach at the point, Gulfside City Park, Tarpon Bay Beach, Bowman’s Beach and the causeway parks are all open to a leashed dog.

Causeway Beach Park and Causeway Islands Park are the easiest with gear: drive-up sand, calm bay-side water, open long hours. Causeway Islands parking is free but the causeway toll is $6; Causeway Beach Park charges $5 an hour.
Bowman’s Beach has restrooms, showers and grills, but it is about a five-minute walk from the lot to the sand.
Parking is $5 per hour and enforced 24 hours a day at Sanibel city lots, including overnight. A long fishing session costs real money here – the Lee County annual pass is valid at Bowman’s.

One firm rule: an off-leash dog on any Sanibel beach is “at large” under the city code. The island’s tolerance extends to leashes, not to loose dogs.

Estuary and River Fishing: Watch the Bank

The Caloosahatchee and the back-bay creeks are the best fishing here and the worst place for a dog at the water’s edge. Alligators use every one of those systems, and a dog wading a mangrove edge at dusk is the textbook incident. Keep the dog in the boat or well back from the bank, and never let it swim in brackish creeks. See our alligator guide.
