Fishing With Dogs in St. Augustine, Florida

St. Johns County beach rules make this the easiest town in Florida to fish the surf with a dog beside you.

Updated October 1, 2026 5 min read By

St. Augustine is one of Florida’s best fishing destinations for dog owners.

It combines:

  • Surf fishing
  • Inshore fishing
  • Offshore charters
  • Intracoastal access
  • Piers
  • Leashed dog-friendly beaches
  • Pet-friendly restaurants

That makes it unusually easy to build a fishing trip where the dog still gets to be part of the vacation.

The One Rule That Governs All of It

St. Johns County allows dogs on its beaches on a leash of 12 feet or less, including in the water, year-round, at every county access. That is unusually generous by Florida standards – most counties give you one designated stretch, or nothing.

Two exceptions matter to an angler:

  • Anastasia State Park bans dogs on its four miles of beach entirely. Its trails and campground are fine; the sand is not.
  • Fort Matanzas, at the southern inlet, is National Park Service ground: a 6-foot leash, and never on the ferry or inside the fort. Dogs are allowed on its beach and trails, which makes it one of the rare federal sites that permits them on sand.

The Driving Beaches Need Care

Vilano and Crescent Beach both take vehicles on the sand, and a beach pass is required from March 1 to September 30. Dogs are still legal there, but you are now fishing beside a traffic lane.

Set up on the landward side of the cone line, keep the leash short rather than long, and remember that drivers on sand do not expect anything to cross. The same goes for the Porpoise Point ramp at the north inlet, which is prime fishing and busy with trucks.

The Pier

The St. Johns County Ocean Pier sits at 350 A1A Beach Blvd, with free parking, restrooms and a splash pad, and charges a small fee to walk or fish the deck. The beach either side is dog-legal under the county rule. We could not find a published pet policy for the deck itself, so ask at the gate rather than assume – and on a busy summer evening, a pier packed with rigs and bait is a poor place for a dog whatever the rule says.

Where to Fish With the Dog, by Water

  • Surf, quiet: Crescent Beach or Butler Beach, both wide, both with restrooms and showers.
  • Surf, close to town: Surfside Park or the beach south of Pier Park at St. Augustine Beach.
  • Inlet: Vilano and Porpoise Point at the north, Matanzas at the south. Strong current, lots of bait, and vehicles at both – short leash.
  • Intracoastal and creeks: your own boat or kayak, with the dog in a life jacket and the tackle boxed.

If a Hook Ends Up in the Dog

It happens more here than anywhere else in Florida, simply because dogs and rods share the same sand. Never cut through the wound or pull a barbed hook back out; cover it, keep the dog from pawing, and drive.

Locally, SARVEC on S. Ponce de Leon Blvd covers weeknights from 6pm to 8am plus weekends, and ECoVets up at World Golf Village runs 6am to midnight. Both are on our St. Johns County pet help page with phone numbers – call on the way so they are ready. The step-by-step is in fish hooks and dogs.

Staying Over

If the trip needs a house rather than a room, our St. Augustine pet-friendly rentals page lists houses that take dogs with the pet fee, the nearest dog-legal beach and the nearest vet worked out for each one – including which have fenced yards, which matters more than it sounds when you are cleaning tackle in the driveway.

If a room suits the trip better, our guide to pet-friendly hotels in St. Augustine covers beachfront on Vilano, the historic district and the I-95 exits, and how the pet fee changes the price.

Surf Fishing

St. Johns County beaches generally allow restrained or leashed dogs under direct control.

That creates one of the best combinations in Florida:

Legal dog-beach access + surf fishing.

Important Exception

Anastasia State Park does not allow ordinary pets on its beach.

Use county beaches instead if bringing the dog.

St. Augustine Beach

St. Augustine Beach is a practical surf-fishing base.

Advantages include:

  • Beach access
  • Nearby restaurants
  • Pet-friendly lodging
  • St. Johns County Ocean Pier

Keep the dog:

  • Behind casting lane
  • On short leash
  • Away from bait

Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach is another strong choice.

It is generally quieter than central St. Augustine Beach.

Best For

A slower surf-fishing morning with a dog.

Vilano Beach

Vilano offers another Northeast Florida fishing environment with access to:

  • Ocean
  • Inlet
  • Intracoastal areas nearby

Check specific fishing zones and current beach rules.

St. Johns County Ocean Pier

The Ocean Pier is a major local fishing location.

Check the current pet rule before bringing the dog onto the pier deck.

Even if allowed, pier hazards include:

  • Hooks
  • Line
  • Fish
  • Crowds

A nearby beach walk may be the better dog activity.

Inshore Fishing

The St. Augustine area offers excellent inshore fishing for species such as:

  • Redfish
  • Spotted seatrout
  • Flounder
  • Sheepshead

Dogs can work well on a private inshore boat when:

  • Captain allows pets
  • Dog wears life jacket
  • Tackle stays contained

Matanzas River

The Matanzas River and Intracoastal system offer:

  • Inshore fishing
  • Kayaking
  • Boat access

Keep dogs away from:

  • Oyster bars
  • Sharp shell
  • Hooks
  • Wildlife

Fort Matanzas Area

Fort Matanzas National Monument permits leashed pets in some outdoor areas, but pet and fishing rules differ by exact location.

Do not assume all monument areas allow both.

Offshore Fishing

St. Augustine has a strong offshore charter scene.

For a dog, offshore fishing is best only if:

  • Captain explicitly approves
  • Dog already handles boats
  • Trip is not too long
  • Shade and water are available

Best Trip for a First-Time Fishing Dog

A simple St. Augustine plan:

Early morning: Surf fishing on a county beach Late morning: Dog-friendly breakfast Midday: Rest Evening: Short beach walk

That is easier than making the dog’s first fishing experience an all-day offshore run.

Wildlife

Watch for:

  • Shorebirds
  • Sea turtle nests
  • Sharks
  • Jellyfish
  • Stingrays

Keep the dog away from:

  • Bird flocks
  • Marked nests
  • Fish carcasses
  • Fishing line

St. Augustine is one of the rare Florida destinations where a dog can legally enjoy the same beach where you may also be surf fishing.

That makes it one of the strongest fishing-and-dog towns in the state.
