The important thing is choosing the right part of St. Augustine before choosing the house.

How Many Pet-Friendly Rentals Are Available?

Quite a lot.

Vrbo currently indexes well over a thousand St. Augustine-area rentals under its pet-friendly filter, although availability changes with dates and individual property policies.

Vacasa currently lists a smaller curated inventory and specifically notes that dog limits, size limits and fees vary by home.

Local operators also maintain dedicated pet-friendly inventories.

First Choice Florida currently lists pet-friendly houses and condos across St. Augustine Beach, Butler Beach, Crescent Beach, Vilano Beach and the historic area.

The quantity isn’t really the problem.

Choosing among them is.

St. Augustine Beach

This is one of the easiest areas for a classic Florida beach trip.

Choose St. Augustine Beach if you want:

• Easy Atlantic access
• Restaurants nearby
• Beach-town atmosphere
• Short drive to downtown
• A mix of homes and condos

Dogs are generally permitted on St. Johns County beaches when properly restrained, making location near a beach access especially valuable.

A house that’s two blocks from the sand may be more useful with a dog than an ocean-view condo where the pet has to navigate elevators and long corridors every time it needs to go outside.

Butler Beach

Butler Beach is one of our favorite areas for travelers who want more residential surroundings.

You’re still close to restaurants and stores, but the atmosphere becomes quieter than central St. Augustine Beach.

Pet-friendly houses here can be particularly attractive because many sit along residential streets within walking distance of the ocean.

Current local inventories include multiple pet-friendly homes in Butler Beach.

Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach keeps pushing the trip farther toward quiet beach vacation and away from city vacation.

It’s a good fit for:

• Long beach walks
• Condos
• Couples
• Families
• Visitors who don’t need downtown outside the front door

Dogs are allowed on the county beach subject to leash rules.

If you’re planning to spend far more time at the ocean than on St. George Street, Crescent Beach can make more sense than downtown.

Vilano Beach

Vilano is the compromise location.

You get the Atlantic Ocean while remaining just north of the historic district.

That’s useful for visitors who genuinely want to split the trip between beach and downtown.

There are pet-friendly cottages and larger vacation homes throughout the Vilano area.

Historic District

Yes, you can rent a pet-friendly house near downtown.

Pet Friendly Cottage is an example of the sort of historic-area cottage that can put guests within walking distance of central St. Augustine while still providing the privacy of a house.

Another waterfront-style option represented in current listings is Pet Friendly Boathouse Cottage on the Bay.

Downtown rentals are excellent if your priorities are:

• Walking
• Historic attractions
• Restaurants
• Bayfront
• Nighttime activities

They’re less convenient if the main reason the dog came to Florida was the beach.

Local Pet-Friendly Rental Inventory

One advantage of using a local vacation-rental company is that you can often get an actual person who knows the property rather than relying completely on filters.

First Choice Florida’s current pet-friendly inventory includes homes and condos in several St. Augustine beach communities and the historic district. Its dedicated pet-friendly page notes that some properties charge pet fees and that many are on quieter streets near the beach.

The broader inventory can also be filtered specifically for pet-friendly properties.

That’s useful because “pet-friendly” is only the beginning of the decision.

A local manager may be able to tell you whether a particular home has:

• Fenced yard
• Ground-floor entrance
• Carpet or hard flooring
• Nearby beach access
• Stairs
• HOA restrictions
• Space suitable for a large dog
• Quiet surroundings

Those things are difficult to judge from a generic search result.

Don’t Assume “Pet-Friendly” Means Every Pet

This is probably the most important rule.

A property marked pet-friendly may mean:

One dog under 25 pounds.

Another might welcome two large dogs.

Another may accept dogs but not cats.

Another may require prior approval.

Vacasa, for example, states that its pet-friendly St. Augustine vacation homes accept dogs but that the number and weight limits vary by individual property.

Read the actual property policy every time.

Look for a Fenced Yard Carefully

“Fenced” is not the same as securely fenced for my dog.

Photos matter.

Look for:

• Fence height
• Gaps
• Gates
• Pool fencing
• Open access under decks
• Shared yards
• Neighboring dogs

If your dog is an escape artist, ask the manager or host directly.

Never assume a yard is escape-proof because the listing uses the word fenced.

Condo Rules Can Be Different

St. Augustine has a huge condo inventory, particularly along the beach.

Condos can be excellent for pets, but associations may impose rules separate from the rental manager.

Possible restrictions include:

• Pet weight
• Number of animals
• Restricted areas
• Elevator rules
• Required leashes
• Breed restrictions

The rental description should disclose those requirements, but confirm them before booking.

Look at the Walk From the Door to the Beach

A listing can truthfully say “near the beach” while making the actual walk inconvenient with a dog.

Check:

• Where the nearest public access is
• Whether you must cross A1A
• Whether sidewalks exist
• How hot the pavement will be
• Whether beach access includes stairs
• Whether cars are permitted on that stretch
• Whether your dog is allowed on that particular beach

The last point matters because Anastasia State Park does not allow pets on its beach, while most St. Johns County beaches do.

Vacation Rental Pet Fees

Pet charges vary widely.

They may be:

• Per stay
• Per night
• Per pet
• Taxable
• Nonrefundable
• Combined with a damage deposit

Ask for the total stay price including the pet before comparing properties.

A house with a slightly higher nightly rate can easily become cheaper once fees are included.

Can You Leave the Dog Alone?

Don’t assume so.

Some rentals allow dogs to remain in the property unattended if crated.

Others prohibit unattended pets completely.

If you plan to tour museums, visit the Castillo interior or do other activities where your dog can’t come, this rule becomes extremely important.

Know it before booking.

Beach House or Downtown Cottage?

Here’s the simple version.

Choose Historic Downtown if walking to restaurants and attractions matters most.

Choose Vilano if you want beach + quick downtown access.

Choose St. Augustine Beach for the classic active beach vacation.

Choose Butler Beach for a more residential beach stay.

Choose Crescent Beach when quiet coastline is the priority.

There isn’t one “best” area for pets.

There’s a best area for the way you and your pet actually travel.

What to Ask Before You Book

Before paying, confirm:

• How many pets are allowed?
• Dogs only?
• Weight limits?
• Breed restrictions?
• Pet fee?
• Is the fee per pet?
• Is the yard fully fenced?
• Can pets be left alone?
• Must they be crated?
• Are pets allowed on furniture?
• Are there stairs?
• What is the flooring?
• Where is the nearest relief area?
• Where is the nearest dog-friendly beach access?
• Are HOA pet rules involved?

Save the answers with your reservation.

Don’t Shop on Price Alone

A cheap rental 20 minutes from the beach may save money and make the entire vacation more annoying.

With a dog, location becomes an amenity.

Being able to walk outside, reach grass immediately and get to the beach without loading everybody into a car has real value.
