Florida has fishing piers all over the state.
Some are great places to fish.
That does not automatically make them good places for dogs.
Pier fishing creates one of the highest concentrations of pet hazards in a small space:
- Hooks
- Cut line
- Bait
- Fish spines
- Crowds
- Railings
- Other anglers
For pet owners:
Confirm dogs are allowed before you go, and keep the dog completely outside the tackle zone.
Pier Rules Are Local
There is no single statewide rule that says dogs are allowed on every fishing pier.
Individual:
- Cities
- Counties
- State parks
- Private operators
set their own pet rules.
Check the exact pier.
Fishing Licenses on Piers
FWC says anglers fishing from a pier with a valid saltwater pier license may be exempt from needing an individual saltwater license.
That does not apply to every pier.
Check before fishing.
Skyway Fishing Pier Has Special Rules
Skyway Fishing Pier State Park has its own current fishing requirements.
FWC currently requires people fishing there to complete an online educational course and carry proof of completion, with limited exceptions for younger anglers accompanied by a qualified adult.
This is a good example of why pier rules must be checked individually.
Hooks on the Deck
Piers often have:
- Baited hooks
- Dropped rigs
- Sabiki rigs
- Lures
- Broken line
A dog should not be allowed to sniff freely around active anglers.
Keep the Dog Beside You
Use:
- Short leash
- Secure harness
Keep the dog away from:
- Rod holders
- Bait coolers
- Cutting tables
- Fish-cleaning stations
Do Not Let the Dog Greet Every Angler
A friendly dog can still:
- Pull a rod
- Catch a hook
- Knock over tackle
Ask before allowing interaction.
Fish Handling
FWC recommends anglers on piers carry:
- Dehooking tool
- Line cutters
and properly support fish.
Keep the dog well back while the fish is:
- Landed
- Measured
- Dehooked
- Cleaned
Fish Spines
FWC specifically warns anglers to be careful of fish spines and barbs.
A dog grabbing a flopping fish can suffer a serious mouth injury.
Railings
Some pier rails have gaps large enough for:
- Small dogs
- Puppies
to get dangerously close to the edge.
Keep small dogs away from rail openings.
Heat on Pier Decks
Pier surfaces can become extremely hot.
Decking may include:
- Concrete
- Wood
- Composite material
Check paw comfort.
Use:
- Boots where appropriate
- Cooling breaks
- Shade
No Shade
Many piers offer limited shade.
Bring:
- Fresh water
- Portable bowl
and keep fishing sessions shorter during hot weather.
Birds
Fishing piers attract:
- Pelicans
- Herons
- Gulls
Do not let dogs chase or bark at birds.
Some birds may already be injured or entangled in fishing line.
Never Let the Dog Eat Fish Scraps
Fish-cleaning stations may contain:
- Bones
- Skin
- Hooks
- Spoiled scraps
Keep dogs away.
If the Pier Is Crowded
A crowded pier may simply be a bad dog outing.
Choose:
- Quieter hour
- Shore fishing
- Dog-friendly park nearby
instead.
If Your Dog Swallows a Hook
Do not pull the line.
Contact an emergency veterinarian immediately.

Pier fishing with a dog can work.
But if the pier is crowded, covered in tackle or too hot, leaving the dog at the hotel may be the better pet-friendly decision.
