Tampa’s pet-friendly outdoor scene is much stronger than many visitors expect.
The city currently manages 194 parks and more than 300 miles of trails, along with multiple dog parks and two standout dog beaches.
Davis Islands Dog Beach
Davis Islands Dog Park & Dog Beach is one of Tampa’s signature pet destinations.
The waterfront dog area allows off-leash activity inside the designated zone.
This is a strong choice for dogs that love:

Picnic Island Dog Beach
Picnic Island Park has a separate gated dog beach just south of the fishing pier.

The dog beach makes Picnic Island one of the best all-around outdoor spots in South Tampa.

Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park Dog Parks
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park now has two new dog parks that opened in February 2026.
The new spaces include:
- Small-breed dog park: about 1,980 square feet
- Large-breed dog park: about 4,900 square feet
These sit directly along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa.

Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park
Julian B. Lane is a large riverfront park with a dog park and plenty of walking space.
The park covers about 25 acres and is a strong downtown alternative when Curtis Hixon is crowded.
Water Works Park
Water Works Park is home to Queenie’s Dog Park.
Its location near:
- Armature Works
- Ulele
- Riverwalk
makes it especially convenient for visitors.
Al Lopez Park
Al Lopez Park includes a designated dog park and is useful for visitors staying near:
- Raymond James Stadium
- West Tampa
- Airport corridor
Check the city’s current maintenance schedule because Tampa periodically closes individual dog parks for scheduled upkeep.
Current Maintenance Closures
The City of Tampa currently lists recurring maintenance closures for some dog parks.
Examples include:
- Curtis Hixon Dog Park: Tuesday and Friday afternoons
- Queenie’s Dog Park at Water Works: Tuesday mornings
- Jim Urbanski Dog Park at Al Lopez: Thursday mornings

Tampa’s City Beaches
The City of Tampa currently manages four beaches:
- Ben T. Davis Beach
- Cypress Point Park
- Davis Islands Seaplane Basin
- Picnic Island Park
Not every city beach is a dog beach.
Use the designated dog beaches rather than assuming dogs can use any sandy shoreline.

Park Rules
Outside designated off-leash areas, Tampa requires pets to remain leashed.
Dog-park users must follow current city rules including:
- Dogs at least 4 months old
- Proper licensing
- ID tags
- Supervision
- Leash when entering and leaving
- Waste cleanup
- Voice control
The city limits users to two off-leash dogs per person.

Heat
Tampa summers are hot and humid.
Dog beaches are best:
- Early morning
- Evening
Even with water nearby, overheating can happen.
Saltwater
Bring fresh water.
Do not let dogs drink Tampa Bay water or seawater as their primary hydration.
Wildlife
Tampa’s waterfront parks are wildlife habitat.
Watch for:

- Snakes
- Birds
- Marine life
