Orlando has a much better park system for dogs than many visitors expect.

The city itself operates more than 140 parks, gardens, recreation areas and neighborhood centers, and the larger metro adds county parks, trails and dog beaches.

Lake Baldwin Park

Lake Baldwin Park is one of Orlando’s best dog destinations.

Visit Orlando currently highlights it as a large dog-friendly park with a sandy beach, where dogs may be off leash from 8:00 a.m. to sunset in the designated area.

That makes it especially useful for dogs that enjoy swimming, sand and off-leash exercise.

Lake Eola Park

Lake Eola is Orlando’s signature downtown park.

Leashed dogs are welcome.

The loop around the lake is a little over a mile and works well for a morning walk, evening walk, farmers market visit or downtown outing.

The main drawback is pavement heat.

In summer, use early morning or evening.

Park of the Americas

Park of the Americas is one of the City of Orlando’s strongest dedicated dog-park options.

The city currently provides:

  • Separate large-dog area
  • Separate small-dog area
  • Fenced off-leash space
  • Waste-bag dispensers
  • Waste baskets
  • Shade pavilions
  • Walking path
  • Picnic tables

Dogs are permitted on leash in the rest of the park.

Current city hours are generally 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Lake Druid Park

Lake Druid Park covers about 19 acres and includes a fenced dog run.

The larger park also has mountain-bike areas, a community garden and open space.

Meadow Woods Dog Park

Visit Orlando currently highlights Meadow Woods Dog Park as having around 19 acres of leash-free running room.

It is particularly convenient for travelers staying south of Orlando, near Orlando International Airport or around Kissimmee.

Shingle Creek Regional Park

Shingle Creek Regional Park gives dog travelers a useful combination of nature and dog facilities.

Visit Orlando notes that its fenced dog area includes a drinking fountain and bathing area.

West Orange Dog Park and Trail

Winter Garden has dog-friendly outdoor options near the West Orange Trail.

This works well if you want to combine off-leash play, a long trail walk and a Plant Street outing in the same part of town.

Bear Creek Nature Trail

Bear Creek Nature Trail in Winter Springs provides a roughly one-mile wooded trail through cypress, oak and palm habitat.

This is a strong choice for dogs that prefer quiet walking and nature rather than crowded dog parks.

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Wekiwa Springs is one of Central Florida’s best-known natural parks.

Dogs can accompany visitors in appropriate designated areas under Florida State Parks pet rules.

Pets are generally restricted from swimming areas, buildings and certain sensitive areas, so check current park rules before arrival.

Celebration Trails

Celebration’s trail system gives Disney-area travelers another walking option.

The town’s paths, lakes and neighborhood streets make it much easier to exercise a dog without driving all the way into central Orlando.

Central Park in Winter Park

Central Park runs through the heart of Winter Park’s Park Avenue district.

Leashed dogs are welcome.

This makes it easy to combine a park walk with shopping, restaurant patios and coffee.

Heat Safety in Orlando Parks

Orlando is inland and often feels hotter than coastal Florida because you lose the ocean breeze.

In summer:

Early morning: best. Midday: usually poor. Evening: good once pavement cools.

Shade helps, but shade does not replace air conditioning during extreme heat.

Water

Carry your own water even when a park has fountains.

A collapsible bowl weighs almost nothing.

Alligators

Central Florida lakes and ponds are alligator habitat.

Do not let dogs wander at the shoreline, drink from ponds or swim in undesignated freshwater.

Lake-view park does not mean dog-swimming park.
