American Airlines is a major Florida carrier, particularly through Miami, and its pet policy is more complicated than Allegiant’s.
For most vacationers, the important part is this:
Small dogs and cats can travel as carry-on pets on eligible flights if they fit inside an approved under-seat carrier. The current carry-on pet charge is $150 per kennel each way.
Large pets generally cannot simply be checked like luggage by ordinary leisure travelers.

Soft-Sided Carriers Are Easier
American specifically recommends soft-sided collapsible carriers.

- Padded
- Water-repellent
- Ventilated on at least three sides
They may have some flexibility as long as they still fit properly beneath the seat without being excessively compressed.
The Pet Must Fit Comfortably
The animal needs to fit completely inside the closed carrier.
Don’t choose a carrier because the dog can technically be zipped into it.
The airline can refuse an animal that does not fit appropriately.
Where Does the Carrier Go?
For most passengers:
Under the seat in front of you.
The carrier remains there during the flight.
The pet must stay inside it.
Your Pet Changes Your Carry-On Allowance
When you bring a carry-on pet, American lets you bring only one other onboard item:
- One personal item
or:
- One regular carry-on bag
not both.
So the carrier effectively consumes one of your two normal cabin-baggage positions.
Pet Strollers
Pet strollers must be checked at the ticket counter.

American limits the number of pet carriers by aircraft.

This means a flight can have seats available and still have no remaining pet capacity.

Premium Cabins Can Be Complicated

Cargo animal transport is much more involved than bringing a small dog underneath the seat.

For a Florida vacation with a large dog, driving may be substantially simpler.
Temperature Restrictions Matter in Florida
American applies temperature restrictions to checked and cargo animals to avoid exposure to dangerous heat or cold during:

For Florida travel, this is a major consideration.

Sedated Pets

Not necessarily.

If you’re headed to South Florida with a small dog or cat, American will often appear in your flight search.
Just remember to add the $300 round-trip cabin-pet cost when comparing fares.
Should You Choose American With a Pet?
American can work well when:
- Your pet fits comfortably under the seat.
- American offers the best nonstop flight.
- You’re heading to Miami or another strong American market.
- You’re comfortable with the $150 each-way pet fee.
It’s less attractive if:
- Your dog is too large for the cabin.
- Another airline charges much less.
