Clearwater can work very well for a pet-friendly trip, but the smartest plans usually combine Clearwater with nearby Dunedin.
The biggest reason is simple:
Honeymoon Island State Park has one of the region’s best legal dog beaches.
The official St. Pete-Clearwater tourism organization currently highlights Clearwater, Dunedin and the surrounding area as a strong pet-friendly destination with dog beaches, dog parks, restaurants and lodging.
Take the Dog to Honeymoon Island Pet Beach
Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin is the standout beach outing near Clearwater.
Florida State Parks currently says the park has a designated pet beach on the south end of the island.
Dogs are allowed there on a 6-foot hand-held leash.
The park also allows dogs on the nature trail in designated areas.

Why It Matters
Most Florida State Park beaches do not allow ordinary pets on the sand or in the water.
Honeymoon Island is a specific exception.
That makes it unusually valuable for dog travelers.
Walk the Nature Trail at Honeymoon Island
The park’s Osprey Trail provides about 2.5 miles of walking through slash pine habitat.
Leashed dogs are allowed in designated pet areas including the nature trail.
This can give you a full morning outing:
trail + pet beach + picnic
without moving the car.
Use Clearwater’s North-Beach Leashed-Dog Area
Clearwater’s current city pet guidance allows dogs on leash on the beach north of Somerset Street.
This is not an off-leash dog beach.
The main public bathing beach south of that area still prohibits ordinary pets.
If you’re staying in North Clearwater Beach, this can be a very convenient option for short morning and evening walks.
Visit Enterprise Dog Park
Enterprise Dog Park is one of Clearwater’s better-known off-leash facilities.
The current destination guide highlights features such as:
- Large fenced area
- Shaded trails
- Creek
- Agility features
For a dog that needs actual running time, this is a useful alternative to leash-only beach outings.
Spend Time in Dunedin
Dunedin may be the best dog-friendly side trip from Clearwater.
Current St. Pete-Clearwater tourism guidance highlights Dunedin as especially pet-friendly, with:
- Dog-friendly brewery patios
- Restaurants with dog menus
- Honeymoon Island access
- Walkable downtown
You can easily build a half day around:
Honeymoon Island + downtown Dunedin + brewery or restaurant patio.
Visit Dunedin Brewery
Dunedin Brewery is currently highlighted by the destination tourism office as welcoming dogs on its outdoor patio.
It is also recognized as Florida’s oldest craft brewery.
This makes it an easy stop after a morning at Honeymoon Island.
Visit Woodwright Brewing
Woodwright Brewing is another Dunedin option currently highlighted as dog-friendly.
Its beer garden and occasional dog treats make it particularly attractive to pet travelers.
Have Lunch at The Living Room on Main
Current tourism guidance highlights The Living Room on Main in Dunedin as a pet-friendly patio restaurant with a dedicated dog menu.
That is one of the stronger pet dining options near Clearwater.
Walk Downtown Clearwater
Downtown Clearwater gives you a quieter alternative to the beach tourism corridor.
You can combine:
- Waterfront
- Coachman Park
- Restaurants
- City walking
into an evening outing.
Use early or late hours in summer.
Explore Coachman Park
Coachman Park is a major downtown Clearwater public space near the waterfront.
For leashed dog walking, always follow current posted rules and avoid restricted event areas.
Large public events can temporarily change access.
Visit Sand Key Park
Sand Key Park is one of the broader area’s park options that appears in current St. Pete-Clearwater pet guidance.
Check the current park-specific rules before visiting because dog access can differ by area.
Do not assume the main swimming beach itself is dog-friendly.
Try a Pet-Friendly Restaurant Patio
The Clearwater-Dunedin area has strong outdoor dining.
Current tourism guidance highlights places such as:
- The Living Room on Main
- Dunedin Brewery
- Woodwright Brewing
- Bon Appetit
- Frenchy’s Outpost
We’ll cover these in our dedicated Pet-Friendly Restaurants in Clearwater guide.
