Jacksonville’s dog-friendly beach rules require a little attention because Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach and the surrounding parks do not all operate under one identical rule.

The second is that Jacksonville has an unusually large park system, giving you plenty of alternatives when the ocean is crowded or too hot.
Jacksonville Beach
Jacksonville Beach is dog-friendly, but seasonal time restrictions apply.
From October 1 through March 31, dogs can use the beach at any hour.
From April 1 through September 30, dogs are allowed only:
before 9:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m.
Dogs must remain leashed.
Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach allows leashed dogs during the day and evening according to current visitor guidance.
For travelers who want flexible beach access, this is one of the strongest areas to consider when choosing accommodations.
Neptune Beach
Neptune Beach permits dogs year-round according to current dog-travel guidance.
Because local beach rules can be revised, always read the signs at your specific access.
Mayport Beach
Mayport Beach is another option where leashed dogs can be welcome during appropriate hours.
Mayport gives you a much different environment from the busier Jacksonville Beach area.
Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park
Hanna Park may be Jacksonville’s best overall outdoor park for visitors with dogs.
Pets are allowed in outdoor areas when restrained and cleaned up after. They are not allowed in certain structures and facilities.

to the normal dog-walk experience.
Important: Huguenot Memorial Park
Don’t assume every northeast Jacksonville shoreline is pet-friendly.
Huguenot Memorial Park currently has much stricter dog rules than Jacksonville’s ordinary beaches.
Day visitors generally cannot bring dogs into the park, while registered campers may have dogs under specific restrictions.
Dutton Island Preserve
Dutton Island is one of the best non-beach walking areas in the Beaches region.
It provides trails through coastal habitat rather than an exposed oceanfront walk.
For hot Florida weather, trails with some natural cover can be far more useful than open beach.
Jacksonville Dog Parks
The City of Jacksonville currently lists multiple municipal dog parks, including:
- Alberts Field
- Springfield Playground
- Ed Austin Regional Park
- Forest Street Dog Park
- John Gorrie/Riverside Park
- Leonard Abess Park
- Oceanway Dog Park
- Tillie K. Fowler Regional Park
Forest Street Dog Park
Forest Street Dog Park is particularly worth calling out because it opened in 2026.
Amenities include:
- Separate large- and small-dog sections
- Double-gated entrances
- Shade trees
- Picnic tables
- Waste receptacles
- Parking
If you’re staying around Riverside, Brooklyn or Downtown, this is one of the most convenient dog-park choices.
Alberts Field
Alberts Field’s dog park is another newer option.
The larger Mandarin park includes:
- Parking
- Drinking fountain
- Picnic shelters
- Restrooms
- Recreation facilities
This is much more convenient for visitors staying in southern Jacksonville.
Why Jacksonville Parks Matter
Jacksonville’s park network includes enormous amounts of public land.
That matters for pet travelers because you aren’t limited to one fenced dog run.
Jacksonville’s landscape includes:
- Marshes
- Forest
- Riverfront
- Beaches
- Trails
- Preserves
Watch for Wildlife
That natural environment also means:
- Alligators
- Snakes
- Coyotes
- Shorebirds
- Ticks
- Other wildlife
Keep dogs away from:
- Pond edges
- Marsh water
- Dunes
- Nesting birds
- Thick vegetation where you can’t see the ground
A dog-friendly park is still wildlife habitat.
Heat Changes Which Park Is Best
At 8:00 a.m., Jacksonville Beach may be perfect.
At 2:00 p.m. in July, a shaded trail or air-conditioned break may be a far better decision.
Use the park based on conditions, not merely because it’s on your itinerary.
Bring Water Even When a Park Has Fountains
Dog-park fountains:

- Become dirty
- May not suit your dog
Carry your own water and collapsible bowl.
