Jacksonville gives you one of the better combinations in Florida for traveling with a dog: beaches, trails, riverfront walks, dog parks, breweries, preserves and outdoor neighborhoods without having to leave the city.
Visit Jacksonville specifically highlights a broad mix of dog-friendly places, including Atlantic Beach, Hanna Park, the Riverwalk, Riverside Arts Market, Jacksonville Arboretum, Timucuan Preserve and several breweries and restaurants.
Spend the Morning at the Beach
Jacksonville has 22 miles of coastline, but the dog rules change depending on which beach community you’re standing in.
At Jacksonville Beach, dogs are allowed at any hour from October 1 through March 31. From April 1 through September 30, they can be on the beach only before 9:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m., and they must remain leashed.
At Atlantic Beach, leashed dogs are allowed during the day and evening. Neptune Beach also permits dogs year-round, although you should verify the current local time and leash rules before making a special trip.
For a Florida dog vacation, early morning is usually the best beach time anyway: cooler sand, fewer people and less heat stress.
Explore Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park
Hanna Park is one of the strongest all-around outdoor stops in Jacksonville.
Pets are allowed throughout the park’s outdoor areas as long as they’re properly restrained and owners clean up after them. Dogs are excluded from places such as Dolphin Plaza, shelters and cabins.
The larger park includes beach access, trails, camping and natural areas, so you can spend significantly more time here than at a normal neighborhood park.
Walk Dutton Island Preserve
If your dog prefers trails to waves, Dutton Island Preserve in Atlantic Beach is an excellent alternative.
The preserve includes trails, marsh views, a kayak launch, fishing areas and picnic facilities.
This is particularly good for an early morning walk when you want something quieter than Jacksonville Beach.
Explore Timucuan Preserve
Jacksonville has an enormous amount of preserved natural land.
The city’s park system includes tens of thousands of acres of parks, state lands and national preserve areas.
Dog-friendly areas around Timucuan can include places such as:
- Fort Caroline
- Theodore Roosevelt Area
- Reddie Point Preserve
Always check the particular trail or historic site’s current animal rules before arriving.
Walk the Jacksonville Riverwalk
Downtown doesn’t have to mean leaving the dog behind.
The Riverwalk is a useful sunset or cool-weather walk along the St. Johns River.
During summer, check the pavement temperature before starting. Waterfront breeze doesn’t automatically mean cool concrete.
Visit Riverside Arts Market
Riverside Arts Market can work well as part of a broader Riverside outing involving:
- Riverwalk
- Parks
- Restaurants
- Historic neighborhoods
Crowds can be substantial, so this is better for dogs that are comfortable around people, food, noise and other animals.
Ride the St. Johns River Taxi
Well-behaved leashed or contained dogs are often welcome aboard the St. Johns River Taxi, except on certain game days or special cruises.
Verify with the operator before you go.
Go to a Real Dog-Oriented Hangout
BrewHound Dog Park + Bar in Neptune Beach combines an off-leash dog park with an outdoor bar and coffee operation.
The off-leash yard has separate large- and small-dog sections, shade and structured entry requirements.
This is one of those places where the dog isn’t simply permitted.
The dog is the reason the place exists.
Visit a Jacksonville Dog Park
Jacksonville currently operates multiple municipal dog parks, including:

- John Gorrie/Riverside Park

Forest Street Dog Park is especially new, with separate large- and small-dog areas, double-gated entries, trees, picnic tables and waste stations.
Walk the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail
The Baldwin Rail Trail can be a much better option than a busy beach for a dog that likes long steady walks.
As always, early morning is the smarter summer choice.
Explore Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
This is a nice change of scenery if you’ve already done several beach days.
Bring:
- Leash
- Water
- Waste bags
- Insect protection appropriate for your pet
Take a Paddleboard or Kayak Outing
If your dog is comfortable on the water, this can be excellent.
Use a canine flotation device and don’t assume a dog that’s a good swimmer will automatically enjoy sitting on a paddleboard.
Visit Beaches Town Center
Beaches Town Center sits where Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach meet.
It’s a useful evening destination because you can combine:
- Walk
- Shops
- Restaurant patio
- Beach-area atmosphere
without constantly getting back into the car.
