Beachfront Hotel Does Not Mean Dog Beach

This is critical.

Destin and Okaloosa County prohibit ordinary pets on the beaches.

A hotel can be:

and the dog still cannot legally use the beach.

What a Destin Pet Fee Really Costs

The fees above are written per stay, which is how most Hilton and Marriott properties here charge, and that changes the math as a trip gets longer. At the Hampton Inn & Suites, Homewood Suites and Hilton Garden Inn, a stay of one to four nights costs $75 and five or more nights costs $125, so a three-night trip works out to $25 a night and a ten-night trip to $12.50. At Hotel Effie it is $150 per stay however long you stay. Four Points charges $100 per pet per stay, so two dogs there cost twice as much as one. Put the full trip in before you compare.

Those figures are what the brands publish as we last read them, and they apply to pets. They do not apply to a service animal.

Service Animals at a Destin Hotel

The ADA defines a service animal as a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Florida law limits the term to a dog or a miniature horse and requires a public accommodation, hotels included, to permit one. In practice that means a hotel must waive its pet fee and deposit for a service animal and cannot charge a cleaning fee for its hair. The ADA lets a business exclude a service dog only when the dog is out of control and the handler does not act, or when it is not housebroken. Weight limits are pet rules, and size is not among those reasons. It may charge the same damage fee it charges any guest.

  • Staff can ask only whether the dog is required because of a disability and what task it is trained to perform. They cannot require paperwork or certification.
  • Emotional support animals do not count as service animals under the ADA or Florida law, so the normal pet policy and fee can apply.
  • A hotel can exclude a service animal that is out of control without effective action by its handler, or that is not housebroken.
  • Knowingly misrepresenting a pet as a service animal is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida, with 30 hours of community service.
