The biggest planning mistake is assuming that all beaches and parks follow the same pet rules.

They do not.

Miami Beach Has Designated Bark Beaches

The City of Miami Beach currently lists three Bark Beaches:

• South Beach at 21 Street
• Mid-Beach at 53 Street
• North Beach at 81 Street

Dogs are permitted only in the designated Bark Beach areas and the hours vary by season and location.

Current city information also requires:

• Rabies tag
• Immediate waste cleanup
• No more than two dogs per owner
• Leash carried at all times
• Dogs leashed outside the designated off-leash area

Haulover Park Dog Beach

Haulover Park is one of Miami-Dade County’s best-known dog destinations.

Current county guidance says dogs can use the designated beach area between:

Current dog-beach hours are:

Sunrise to sunset daily

Dogs must remain leashed outside the designated dog-beach zone.

The park also has a Bark Park.

Miami Beach Parks Are More Restrictive Than Many Visitors Expect

The City of Miami Beach currently states that ordinary dogs are not allowed in city parks unless visiting a designated dog park.

Dogs must be leashed while traveling to and from those dog parks.

That means you should not assume a grassy Miami Beach park is automatically a legal dog-walking area.

Miami-Dade County Parks

Miami-Dade County maintains more than 200 public parks and launched an updated Park Finder in 2026 that can be filtered for amenities such as dog parks.

For a dog-focused trip, this is useful because the county system is much larger than Miami Beach alone.

South Beach With a Dog

South Beach can work well for a social dog if you use the designated Bark Beach and stick to outdoor areas.

Expect:

• Crowds
• Traffic
• Scooters
• Music
• Hot pavement
• Busy sidewalks

Early morning is often much easier than midday or late night.

Brickell and Downtown Miami

Brickell and Downtown are better suited to:

• Leashed city walks
• Outdoor patios
• Waterfront promenades
• Hotel stays

rather than beach time.

Heat and pavement are major considerations.

Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove is one of the better neighborhoods for a slower pet-friendly Miami trip.

It offers:

• Marina atmosphere
• Less beach-tourist chaos

Coral Gables

Coral Gables is another useful option for dogs that do better in landscaped residential and commercial districts than on crowded beachfront sidewalks.

Key Biscayne

Key Biscayne has beautiful beaches and parks, but do not assume ordinary dogs are allowed everywhere.

Heat

Miami heat and humidity are serious.

A realistic pet schedule is:
