Key West is one of those destinations where a dog can be part of much of the actual vacation.
The best pet-friendly activities include:
- Dog Beach
- Higgs Beach Dog Park
- Old Town walking
- Duval Street
- Key West Bight
- Outdoor dining
- Monroe County parks
Swim at Key West Dog Beach
The city’s dedicated Dog Beach is at:
1500 Vernon Avenue
Current city information says it is open sunrise to sunset.
It is small, but it is specifically designated for dogs to swim.

Run at Higgs Beach Dog Park
Higgs Beach includes a large dog park with separate runs for:
- Small dogs
- Large dogs
This is a better choice than Dog Beach if the goal is fenced off-leash exercise rather than swimming.
Walk Old Town Early
Old Town is one of Key West’s best pet activities.
Early morning gives you:
- Cooler pavement
- Fewer crowds
- Historic architecture
- Quiet side streets
This can be much better for a dog than midday Duval Street.
Walk Duval Street
Duval can be fun with a confident, social dog.
Choose quieter hours if your dog dislikes crowds.
Expect:
- Music
- Bicycles
- Scooters
- People
- Restaurant traffic
Explore Key West Bight
The marina area is good for:
- Boats
- Waterfront walking
- Outdoor restaurants
- Evening atmosphere
Watch carefully for:
- Fishing line
- Hooks
- Bait
- Dock edges
Visit a Monroe County Park
Monroe County currently allows leashed pets at county parks, with cleanup required.
Check the exact park before visiting.

Have Breakfast Outside
Key West has a huge outdoor dining culture.
Morning is often the best dog-friendly dining time because:
- Pavement is cooler
- Patios are quieter
- Humidity is lower than midday
See our dedicated Pet-Friendly Restaurants in Key West guide.
Photograph the Southernmost Area
The Southernmost Point area is outdoors, but crowds can be intense.
A dog can be part of the walk if:
- Leashed
- Comfortable around people
- Kept out of traffic
Do not force a nervous dog into the photo-line chaos.
Watch the Sunset
Key West sunsets are a major attraction.
Choose an outdoor waterfront area that permits dogs and keep the dog leashed.
Do a Quiet Residential Walk
Some of the best dog walks are away from the major attractions.
Key West’s residential streets offer:
- Historic homes
- Tropical landscaping
- Chickens
- Shade pockets
Keep dogs from chasing free-roaming chickens.
Know When to Skip an Attraction
Many indoor attractions will not allow ordinary pets.
If the humans want to visit:
- Museums
- Indoor historic houses
- Indoor exhibits
make a separate safe plan for the dog.

Dry Tortugas: Why the Dog Cannot Make the Boat
Dry Tortugas National Park is the day trip many Key West visitors want, and the rules decide it for the dog. The commercial ferry does not allow pets onboard. Pets are permitted on Garden Key, on a leash and under physical control at all times, with the owner removing all pet waste from the park, but they are prohibited inside Fort Jefferson and cannot go to any other key in the park.
The park says visitors arriving on a personal boat or with permitted tour guides may bring pets, and that they should contact those services directly for specifics. The ferry is the one option that is closed to the dog, so a dog that cannot stay alone all day means a different plan for the day or a different companion to stay behind.
One more reason for care if you do bring a dog by private boat: the park is running a rat management program that uses toxicants that pose health risks to pets, and the park asks owners to prevent their pets from interacting with bait boxes. Keep the dog on a short leash and away from any box.
In the Keys that includes private fishing and boat charters whose operators say pets are welcome. See also our Florida tours and activities that take dogs, a statewide list of kayaks, charters and tours whose operators say dogs are welcome.
