Bringing your dog to dinner in St. Augustine isn’t particularly difficult.
The city has a strong outdoor-dining culture, and the local tourism office says many restaurants with patios and decks welcome pets. The important part is remembering that outdoor seating and pet-friendly seating aren’t automatically the same thing. Policies can change, and sometimes only a particular section of a restaurant allows dogs.
So this isn’t a list of every restaurant with tables outside.
These are places where dogs are currently welcomed in designated outdoor areas, plus some advice on choosing the right restaurant for where you’re staying.
Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille
For visitors exploring the historic district, Harry’s is one of the easiest dog-friendly dinner options.
Harry’s currently welcomes leashed dogs on its patio. The restaurant asks guests not to feed their dogs while dining there.
The location on Avenida Menendez also makes it easy to combine dinner with a walk along the bayfront.
That matters more than it sounds. If you’ve already parked downtown, you don’t necessarily want to load the dog back into the car just to eat.
Florida Cracker Cafe
Florida Cracker Cafe sits directly on St. George Street and welcomes pets on its outdoor garden patio.
The restaurant specializes in Florida and Southern-style food, with seafood, shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, sandwiches and similar casual fare.
It’s a particularly convenient lunch stop if you’re already walking the historic district with your dog.
The Backyard at Meehan’s
The Backyard is the open-air tropical side of Meehan’s near the bayfront.
Current local tourism information says well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome in the Backyard.
This is a useful choice when you want something casual rather than formal and don’t want to leave the historic core.
Mojo Old City BBQ
Mojo Old City BBQ is near the City Gates on Cordova Street.
The restaurant is particularly useful for dog owners because it has large outdoor patio areas and is known for keeping water bowls available for dogs.
If you’ve spent the afternoon walking St. George Street, the location makes this an easy stop without moving the car.
Beachcomber St. Augustine
For a completely different atmosphere, Beachcomber sits right at St. Augustine Beach.
The outdoor seating is dog-friendly, and diners frequently report that dogs are offered water and are made genuinely welcome rather than merely tolerated.
This would be one of our first choices for someone staying near the beach because you can combine breakfast, lunch or dinner with a beach walk.
Remember that St. Johns County requires dogs to remain restrained on the beach.
Paladar Cuban Eatery & Bakery
Down toward Butler Beach, Paladar has a dog-friendly outdoor patio and works particularly well for breakfast or lunch.
Current local listings confirm dogs are welcome on the patio.
This is worth knowing about if you’re staying south of St. Augustine Beach because you don’t need to drive all the way downtown just to find somewhere you can eat with your dog.
Beachside Diner
Beachside Diner is another useful Anastasia Island option, particularly for breakfast and brunch.
It has pet-friendly outdoor seating and is close enough to the beach to work naturally into a morning outing.
Connolly’s Shore Grill
Farther south on A1A, Connolly’s is a casual breakfast and lunch restaurant with dog-friendly outdoor seating.
For visitors staying around Butler Beach or Crescent Beach, restaurants like this are important because “pet-friendly St. Augustine” doesn’t have to mean driving downtown every time you want to eat.
Historic District or Beach?
Where you’re staying should influence where you eat.
Historic Downtown: Harry’s, Florida Cracker Cafe, Meehan’s and Mojo make it possible to combine sightseeing, walking and dinner.
St. Augustine Beach: Beachcomber and Beachside Diner work well around beach time.
Butler Beach / South A1A: Paladar and Connolly’s keep you closer to your rental or condo.
This is one reason we recommend choosing accommodations by neighborhood rather than simply booking whichever pet-friendly room appears cheapest.
Before You Bring the Dog
Even when a restaurant is known to welcome dogs, call or check before making a special trip.
Ask:
“Are dogs allowed in your outdoor dining area today?”
That catches temporary closures, private events, weather-related patio changes and policy changes.
Also consider whether your dog actually enjoys restaurants.
A busy St. Augustine patio can include:
- Children
- Other dogs
- Live music
- Servers carrying food
- Tight table spacing
- Street traffic
- Horse carriages downtown
- Heat
A dog that loves an empty coffee-shop patio may feel differently about Saturday night downtown.
Florida Heat and Patio Dining
Outdoor dining sounds perfect until July arrives.
A shaded patio can still be hot and humid enough to make a dog uncomfortable.
Whenever possible, choose breakfast, early lunch or evening meals rather than sitting outside during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Bring water even if the restaurant normally provides it.
Don’t Feed From the Table
It’s tempting.
You’re on vacation. The dog is staring at your fish.
But restaurant food may contain onions, garlic, heavy seasoning, sauces, bones or other ingredients you wouldn’t normally give your pet.
Bring a few normal treats if you want the dog to have something while everyone else eats.
