Pet-Friendly Beaches & Parks: Clearwater, FL

No pets on the bathing beach, leashed dogs north of Somerset Street, and Honeymoon Island as the real dog beach.

Updated September 7, 2026 3 min read By

Clearwater has good outdoor options for dogs, but the beach rules require attention.

The three biggest things to know are:

  1. The main public bathing beach does not allow ordinary pets.
  2. Dogs are currently allowed on leash north of Somerset Street.
  3. Honeymoon Island State Park has a designated pet beach.

Clearwater Beach Public Bathing Area

The City of Clearwater currently prohibits ordinary dogs, cats and other pets from the public bathing beach.

Qualifying service animals are handled separately.

That means you should not assume a pet-friendly hotel automatically gives your dog legal beach access.

North Clearwater Beach — Dogs Allowed on Leash

Current city guidance identifies an area north of Somerset Street where dogs are allowed on the beach.

Dogs must remain leashed.

This is not an off-leash dog beach.

For visitors staying in North Clearwater Beach, however, it can be extremely useful for:

  • Sunrise walk
  • Evening walk
  • Short beach outing

Honeymoon Island Pet Beach

Honeymoon Island State Park is the strongest true dog-beach option near Clearwater.

Florida State Parks currently identifies a pet beach on the southern tip of the island.

Dogs must remain on a 6-foot hand-held leash.

Why Honeymoon Island Is Special

Florida State Parks generally do not allow ordinary pets on coastal swimming beaches.

The statewide FAQ specifically identifies Honeymoon Island’s pet-friendly section as an exception.

Pets must still remain leashed or otherwise under physical control.

Honeymoon Island Nature Trail

Dogs are also allowed on the park’s nature trail in designated areas.

The Osprey Trail runs approximately 2.5 miles.

This gives you a stronger full outing than beach alone.

Enterprise Dog Park

Enterprise Dog Park is one of Clearwater’s standout fenced dog parks.

Current destination guidance describes the park as having:

  • Shaded trails
  • Creek
  • Agility area

That makes it useful for:

  • Off-leash exercise
  • Longer play sessions
  • Dogs that prefer land to water

Sand Key Park

Sand Key Park is another local park frequently included in pet-related regional listings.

Check the specific current dog-access areas before visiting.

A park can have dog-friendly facilities without permitting ordinary dogs on all beachfront sections.

Coachman Park

Coachman Park in downtown Clearwater provides waterfront public space for leashed walking under applicable current rules.

This is best used as a city outing rather than a dog park.

Alligators and Freshwater

Clearwater-area ponds, lakes and creeks can contain alligators.

Florida State Parks explicitly warns that ordinary pets are not allowed in designated freshwater swimming areas and similar locations partly because pets can be viewed as prey by alligators.

Keep dogs away from:

  • Pond edges
  • Marshy water
  • Reeds
  • Unfamiliar freshwater shoreline

Heat

Use beach and park areas:

  • Early morning
  • Evening

Midday summer sand and pavement can become dangerously hot.

Bring Fresh Water

Do not let your dog rely on Gulf water.

Bring:

  • Fresh water
  • Portable bowl
  • Waste bags
  • Towel
  • Leash

Wildlife at Honeymoon Island

Honeymoon Island supports:

  • Ospreys
  • Shorebirds
  • Gopher tortoises
  • Armadillos
  • Other wildlife

Keep dogs controlled and away from nesting or feeding areas.
