Andaz Miami Beach

Andaz Miami Beach currently has a very clear pet policy.

Current Hyatt rules list:

  • $100 pet fee per stay
  • One dog up to 50 pounds
  • Up to two dogs with a 75-pound combined limit
  • Maximum two pets per room
  • At least three days’ advance notice

Pets are not permitted in:

Where Andaz Says No, and What a Service Dog Changes

The Andaz policy above lists the places a pet cannot go: restaurants, bars, pool decks, the beach, the spa and the fitness center. That is a pet rule, and a resort can write one like it. A service animal is not a pet. The ADA defines a service animal as a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability, Florida limits the term to a dog or a miniature horse, and both require a hotel to permit one. The ADA requires a business to waive pet fees and deposits for a service animal, and lets it exclude one only when the dog is out of control and the handler does not act, or when it is not housebroken. The 50-pound cap, the two-dog limit and the three-day notice are pet rules, and size is not among those reasons.

  • Two questions only. Staff may ask whether the dog is required because of a disability and what work or task it is trained to do. They may not demand documentation or certification.
  • No cleaning fee for service animal hair. The hotel may charge the same damage fee it charges any guest.
  • Emotional support animals do not qualify as service animals under the ADA or Florida law, so a hotel may apply its normal pet policy and fee.
  • A service animal can be excluded if it is out of control and the handler does not take effective action, or if it is not housebroken.
  • Misrepresenting a pet as a service animal is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida with 30 hours of community service.

Reading a Miami Hotel Fee

Andaz charges $100 per stay. On a three-night weekend that is about $33 a night, and on a week about $14 a night. A hotel charging $50 a night would cost $150 for the weekend and $350 for the week. For a stay of any length, the per-stay fee is the cheaper structure, and the nightly fee is the one that surprises people on the bill.
