Clearwater

No pets on the public bathing beach - but there is a leashed-dog stretch north of Somerset Street, and Honeymoon Island is the real dog beach.

Clearwater is a strong pet-friendly destination, but Clearwater Beach has one rule that visitors need to understand immediately:

Ordinary pets are not allowed on the public bathing beach.

That means you can absolutely vacation in Clearwater with a dog, but you need to separate:

  • Clearwater Beach walking
  • Legal dog beach access
  • Dog parks
  • Pet-friendly lodging
  • Outdoor restaurants

The good news is that Clearwater has several excellent alternatives.

Are Dogs Allowed on Clearwater Beach?

Not on the main public bathing beach.

The City of Clearwater currently states that:

No dogs, cats or other pets are allowed on the public bathing beach, except qualifying service animals.

Current city information: myclearwater.com

Important North Clearwater Exception

The city’s current pet map identifies an area north of Somerset Street where dogs are allowed on the beach on leash.

This is not considered a dog beach.

Dogs must remain leashed.

South of Somerset Street, ordinary pets are prohibited from the beach.

Current city pet map guidance: myclearwater.com

This is important because older or simplified guides often say:

“No dogs on Clearwater Beach.”

The more accurate current rule is:

No ordinary pets on the public bathing beach, with a leashed-pet area north of Somerset Street.

Beach Walk

Even where dogs cannot use the bathing beach, you can still enjoy the surrounding Clearwater Beach area with a leashed dog in appropriate public spaces.

Beach Walk and nearby streets can be useful for:

  • Morning walks
  • Evening walks
  • Restaurants
  • People watching

Always obey posted signs around specific beach-access points.

Honeymoon Island Dog Beach

Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin is one of the best dog-beach options near Clearwater.

Current St. Pete-Clearwater tourism guidance identifies Honeymoon Island as one of the region’s major dog-friendly beaches.

Dogs must remain leashed under state park rules.

This can be one of the best outings for Clearwater visitors who genuinely want beach time with the dog.

Enterprise Dog Park

Enterprise Dog Park is one of Clearwater’s standout dog parks.

The official tourism organization describes it as a large fenced park with:

  • Shaded trails
  • Creek
  • Agility area

It sits about 20 minutes northeast of Clearwater Beach.

Current Clearwater guide: visitstpeteclearwater.com

For a dog that needs actual exercise, this may be more useful than another leash walk near the beach.

Sand Key Park

Current St. Pete-Clearwater pet guidance includes Sand Key Park among dog-park options in the region.

Check the current park-specific rules for where dogs are allowed before visiting.

Do not assume the public bathing shoreline itself is a dog beach.

Moccasin Lake Nature Park

Moccasin Lake Nature Park is a 54-acre nature preserve in Clearwater with:

  • Shaded trails
  • Boardwalks
  • Observation areas
  • Wildlife

Current tourism guidance highlights the park as a major Clearwater nature attraction.

Check current pet rules before making a special dog trip, particularly because this is wildlife habitat.

Downtown Clearwater

Downtown Clearwater can be a better dog experience than the beach corridor if you want:

  • Quieter walking
  • Coachman Park
  • Waterfront
  • Restaurants

The area also connects with Clearwater Ferry service, though pet rules for transportation should be verified directly before boarding.

Pet-Friendly Hotels

The greater Clearwater area has substantial pet-friendly lodging inventory.

Current tourism guidance highlights properties such as:

  • Camelot Resort in north Clearwater Beach
  • Clarion Inn & Suites in Clearwater
  • Numerous pet-friendly hotels across St. Pete-Clearwater

Camelot is especially interesting because north Clearwater Beach is closer to the current leashed-dog shoreline area north of Somerset Street.

Clearwater Beach Hotels

A hotel may be pet-friendly even when the beach in front of it is not.

Before booking, ask:

  • Where can I walk the dog?
  • Is the hotel north or south of Somerset Street?
  • Is there grass?
  • What is the nearest legal dog beach?
  • What is the pet fee?

Vacation Rentals

Vacation rentals are available throughout:

  • Clearwater Beach
  • North Clearwater
  • Downtown Clearwater
  • Dunedin
  • Nearby residential neighborhoods

A rental can be especially useful for:

  • Longer stays
  • Multiple pets
  • Kitchen/laundry
  • Private entrance

Dunedin as an Alternative Base

Dunedin is one of the strongest pet-friendly communities in the region.

It gives you access to:

  • Honeymoon Island dog beach
  • Dog-friendly breweries
  • Restaurants
  • Walkable downtown

For a dog-focused trip, Dunedin may actually be a better base than central Clearwater Beach.

Pet-Friendly Restaurants

The Clearwater-Dunedin area has strong outdoor dining.

Current tourism guidance highlights dog-friendly options in Dunedin such as:

  • The Living Room on Main
  • Dunedin Brewery
  • Woodwright Brewing
  • Bon Appetit
  • Frenchy’s Outpost

We’ll maintain a dedicated Pet-Friendly Restaurants in Clearwater guide.

Clearwater Beach Heat

The Gulf breeze helps, but summer heat is still serious.

Use:

Morning: long walk or dog park. Midday: air conditioning. Evening: Beach Walk or patio.

Wildlife

Around lakes, preserves and freshwater:

  • Assume alligators may be present.
  • Keep dogs away from shorelines.
  • Do not allow dogs to drink from ponds.

A Good Pet-Friendly Clearwater Day

Morning: Honeymoon Island Dog Beach.

Late morning: Dunedin brunch.

Midday: Hotel/rental break.

Late afternoon: Enterprise Dog Park.

Evening: Clearwater Beach Walk or downtown.

Another Day

Morning: North Clearwater leashed beach area if appropriate.

Lunch: Pet-friendly patio.

Afternoon: Rest.

Evening: Dunedin or Clearwater waterfront.

Best Area by Trip Type

Best traditional Clearwater vacation: Clearwater Beach Best access to leashed shoreline: North Clearwater Beach Best actual dog beach: Honeymoon Island Best dog park: Enterprise Dog Park Best dog-focused neighborhood base: Dunedin Best quieter city experience: Downtown Clearwater

The Clearwater Rule to Remember

Main public bathing beach: no ordinary pets.

North of Somerset Street: leashed dogs allowed in the designated area.

Honeymoon Island: dedicated dog-friendly beach under current state park rules.

Know which sand you’re standing on.

You just need a better plan than:

“Our hotel is on the beach, so the dog can go too.”
