Sarasota has a large dog-friendly outdoor dining scene.

Sarasota County runs a permit program for dogs on restaurant patios, which makes the patio rules here easier to check than in most of Florida, and many Sarasota restaurants take part. We name the ones with a published source below, and explain how to check any other.

The smartest approach is to choose the area first.

Old Salty Dog

Old Salty Dog is one of Sarasota’s best-known dog-friendly waterfront restaurants.

Dogs are welcomed at outdoor tables, and the menu includes:

The Law Behind the Patio: Sarasota County’s Doggie Dining Permit

A dog at a restaurant table is not a courtesy in Florida, it is a permitted exception. State law (Florida Statute 509.233) lets a local government choose to allow dogs in designated outdoor dining areas, and a restaurant has to apply for a permit before it can say yes. Sarasota County has taken that option: the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County inspects and issues permits for what it calls Doggie Dining sites, under a county ordinance.

The state law sets the conditions every permitted patio has to meet, and they explain what you will and will not be allowed to do:

  • Leashed and under control at all times.
  • Not on chairs, tables or other furnishings. The dog sits or lies on the ground beside you.
  • No walking through the restaurant. Dogs cannot pass through any indoor or non-designated outdoor area, and the designated patio cannot require entering or crossing an indoor area. If the only way to the patio is through the dining room, that patio is not a legal dog patio.
  • Signs and sanitizer. The establishment must post reminders for staff and patrons and a notice to the public, employees must wash their hands after handling dogs, and waterless hand sanitizer must be provided at tables. A permitted patio has a sign. If you cannot find one, ask.
  • The permit names the days and hours dogs are allowed in the designated area, so a patio can be dog-friendly at lunch and closed to dogs at a Saturday night rush.

The City of Sarasota’s sidewalk café permit application also asks for a copy of the Doggie Dining permit where one applies, so a table on the public sidewalk is regulated twice.
